When Will I Get My Tax Refund? 2020 Tax Year Refund Schedule (2022 Tax Season)

The first day to file your 2020 taxes is January 25, 2021. The IRS reports that 9 out of 10 taxpayers who filed electronically in 2019 received their tax refunds within 21 days. Some taxpayers receive their refund in as little as 8 days, and most receive it within 10-14 days.

The IRS no longer publishes a tax refund calendar, but they continue to issue guidance stating most taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days. So we have used IRS guidelines, statements, and historic tax return data to create an IRS refund schedule, which we have published on this page.

We have also included additional tax return information, such as a list of important dates and Frequently Asked Questions regarding IRS refund dates. It’s important to note the calendar is an estimate and represents when the majority of tax returns should be processed.

IRS E-File Schedule for Tax Refunds via Check or Direct Deposits

As alluded to above, the IRS previously released an annual schedule to help taxpayers better plan around tax season so tax-filers will know when they can expect to receive their refund check. They stopped this practice in 2013 (2012 tax year) after there were delays in the refund process due to new anti-fraud measures.

The table below shows an approximation of when your federal tax refund should be direct-deposited into your bank account or the date your check will be mailed. This table is based on previous tax return charts. Remember, this is only an estimation and not a guarantee.

How to use this tax refund chart: This schedule only applies to tax returns filed electronically. The left column represents the date your tax refund was accepted by the IRS. This chart does not apply to tax refunds filed by mail because it takes the IRS much longer to manually process returns. There is no tax refund schedule for paper returns because it is difficult to know when the IRS will physically process your return.

This table cuts off after the final tax filing deadline for extensions, which is October 15th this year. Here is the full IRS E-File Tax Refund Schedule.

Some important notes about this tax refund schedule: This is only good when you E-File your taxes because the IRS will notify you of the date of acceptance – generally within 72 hours of receipt. Tax returns sent on paper forms must be manually entered into the IRS computers and there is no way to track the date of acceptance. So this chart won’t work for estimating which day your tax return will be sent.

The other important thing to note is that IRS refund checks are processed fairly quickly, usually within 1-2 weeks. This is just one more reason to say no to refund anticipation loans.

When Can I File My Taxes – And When is My Tax Return Due?

What is the first day you can file your 2020 taxes?

January 25, 2021, is the first day you can officially file your 2020 tax return. That said, you can always complete your return as soon as you have your paperwork ready. Many software programs will allow you to submit your return through their system and they will automatically file the return for you on the day the IRS begins accepting returns. This will get your return in the queue faster, and hopefully, get your refund processed more quickly.

Filing Tax Returns Early

The first official day to file taxes is January 25, 2021, according to the IRS. Last year, some people reported they were able to submit their tax return around January 15, as part of IRS HUB Testing. HUB Testing is a controlled launch of the tax return process so the IRS can test the submission process and troubleshoot any errors before making the general launch for all taxpayers.

While there are benefits to submitting early, only a limited number of tax preparation companies are able to process these early returns, and only in limited numbers. Expect your tax return to be processed on the first day of tax return filing unless your tax professional or software company has informed you your return will be included in this program.

When is My 2020 Tax Return Due?

Tax returns are normally due on April 15 each year, unless the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday. If that is the case, the tax return is due on the following business day. For example, in 2018, taxes were due on April 17, 2018, because April 16th is Emancipation Day, an observed holiday in Washington, DC. So it’s a good idea to double-check each year!

What happens if you don’t file your taxes on time?

Don’t do it! Instead, try to file a tax extension. Filing a tax extension is free, and you can do it at any time. Just be aware that you need to pay any money due by the tax deadline, or you may owe penalties or fees. So get an estimated tax payment in the mail if you need to, then figure out your books. The deadline to file your tax return if you filed an extension is October 15th.

IRS E-File – When Will I Get My Tax Refund?

How long does it take to process a tax return?

The most important factors for tax return processing time are whether you efile or file a paper return. As you might have guessed, e-filing results in much faster turnaround time. Paper returns have to be manually entered into the system and can remain in the queue for several days (or longer) before they can be processed. Of course, the complexity of your return also affects how long it takes to process your return.

How long does it take to get a tax refund?

The IRS has a goal of getting tax refunds to taxpayers within 21 days. They reach this goal about 90% of the time. In fact, some people receive their federal tax refund in as few as 8 days, and most people receive their refunds in about 10-14 days.

In previous years, the IRS created an official IRS tax refund schedule for when they will send out federal tax refunds via direct deposit or by check. They now issue general guidance. The general rule of thumb is that direct deposits will be sent out a few days before paper checks are sent out (the delay for a paper check can actually take up to one week, depending on how many refunds the IRS has to process).

Are there any known tax refund delays?

Yes. A law requires the IRS to withhold tax refunds when the taxpayer claims either the Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credits (ACTC). Refunds must be withheld until Feb. 15, 2021, regardless of when you filed your tax return. Tax refunds that claim these credits after that date are processed as they come in. The IRS has also created new anti-fraud measures to combat tax refund theft. So some returns may be delayed for additional review.

When will my refund be in my bank account?

Direct deposits are faster than paper checks. However, keep in mind it may take a few days for your financial institution to make your deposit available to you. Some banks make direct deposits available the day they hit, while other banks may hold the funds for a couple of business days. Check with your bank for more information. Paper checks also have a delay for fund availability: it may take several days for the check to arrive in the mail, then another few days after you deposit the check before the funds are available (many banks place a hold on checks).

What day of the week does the IRS deposit refunds?

The IRS process ACH transactions on any normal business day. (The IRS used to process electronic refunds once or twice a week, now they are processed on each business day).

What day of the week does the IRS mail paper checks?

Fridays.

Electronic Tax Returns and Payments Are Fastest

If you file your taxes with the IRS EFile, or with a tax software program that files your taxes online for you, then you are in luck. You will generally receive your tax refund much more quickly than if you file your taxes by mail. The IRS can process electronic tax returns faster and easier than paper returns. This makes it faster for them to clear the books on your tax return and send you a refund—via either an ACH transaction or by check.

ACH transactions (bank to bank electronic transfers) are much faster and safer than receiving a paper check. So if you want to receive your refund faster, electronic is the way to go! While you are waiting on your tax return, here is a great way to make a fast $250 free money just for opening up a Chase Bank Checking account and savings as a new customer!

Top Tax Filing Services

If you have a little more complicated than using the simple form, then you might want to consider filing with one of the top tax services. Not only can you get your return faster, but you can also take advantage of deductions you may otherwise miss, and get audit protection.

The top services include:

TurboTax – The best-known name in Tax Software, our TurboTax review details everything you get for both free and paid solutions.

H&R Block – One of the oldest tax filing services in the country, H&R Block is known for both its online and local availability.

Tax Act – With more than 20 years of tax filing experience, TaxAct is a top option for anyone looking for a full-featured platform.

Where is My Tax Refund Check?

You can check the status of your federal tax refund as soon as 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of your e-filed return. Please note the IRS only updates the status of your refund once a week, on Wednesdays. So checking back several times a day throughout the week won’t normally give you any new information. The quickest and easiest way to get this information is to go to the Where’s My Refund page. Or, call 1-800-829-1954 or 1-800-829-4477.

Want a Bigger Tax Refund?

If the idea of a larger tax refund sounds appealing to you, then you may wish to take advantage of tax-advantaged accounts, such as opening a Traditional IRA. This will not only help you save money for retirement, but it can also help you receive a larger tax refund, as up to $5,500 worth of contributions are tax-deductible ($6,500 if you are over 50 years of age).

Reducing your taxable income by several thousand dollars is worth a nice chunk of change in your tax return next year. If you want to learn more, then here are some top IRA companies, where you can open an IRA. You can also adjust your income tax withholdings in your paycheck.

2020 Veterans Day Free Meals, Discounts, & Events

Veterans Day is a day to remember and thank military members for their service in the armed forces. As a military veteran, it always humbles me to see the thanks given by so many people on Veterans Day. Though none of us served for recognition, it is nice (and humbling) to be thanked for your service.

Many restaurants and retailers also offer veterans special discounts or even free meals on Veterans Day. This is very generous on their part, and certainly something they don’t have to do. If you are a military veteran, I encourage you to participate in one or more of these events. These Veterans Day appreciation events are a great way to meet other veterans and show the restaurants and retailers you appreciate their generosity.

We recommend sharing this resource with any other Veterans you may know. You can also see a list of military discounts, more Veteran’s Day Free Meals, and Veterans Day Retail Discounts on our other site, The Military Wallet.

I’m normally not a fan of annual fees, but this card offers enough benefits that many people can easily earn that amount back and still come out with positive cash back. If the annual fee concerns you, then check out another version of this card, the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express. The Everyday Card has no annual fee but offers lower rewards tiers.

Rewards:

  • 6% Cash Back at US supermarkets for first $6,000 per year in purchases; 1% cashback after that
  • 6% Cash Back on select US Streaming services.
  • 3% Cash Back at US gas stations & on transportation services, including taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses, and more.
  • 1% Cash Back on purchases in other categories.
  • Cash Back is awarded as Reward Dollars which can be redeemed for a statement credit, gift cards, or shopping.
  • Terms and limitations apply.
  • $95 Annual Fee

The cash back is awarded to cardholders as Reward Dollars which can be redeemed for statement credits, gift cards, and merchandise.

  • Current Welcome Offer: Earn a $250 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new card within the first 3 months.

Again, there is a $95 annual fee for this card and terms apply.

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit CardLike the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card offers a flat 1.5% cash back rewards program on all purchases. Again, this applies to all purchases – no rotating categories or hoops to jump through, no need to sign up for rewards each quarter, and there are no limits to how much cash back you can earn. The best part? Your rewards never expire as long as your account remains open.

  • Current early spend bonus: There is a $150 cash bonus after you spend $500 within the first 3 months of opening your account.

Chase Freedom – Best Gas Rewards Credit Card with Bonus Categories (up to 5% Cash Back)

Chase FreedomThe Chase Freedom is another credit card that makes our list of the best gas cards. This credit card is not to be confused with the Chase Freedom Unlimited, mentioned above, which has a similar name, but different benefits. The Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a flat 1.5% cash back on all purchases.

The Chase Freedom offers 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter. All you need to do is activate the bonus category (via phone, text, or email). The bonus categories rotate each quarter. Gas is usually offered as a bonus category each year. So you can save 5% on up to $1,500 of fuel purchases for at least 3 months each year.

The Chase Freedom also offers an automatic 1% cash back on all other purchases. There are no limits to the 1% cash back rewards, and your rewards don’t expire as long as your account remains open. There is no minimum redemption amount.

  • 0% Intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases.
  • There is no annual fee for the Chase Freedom card.

What to Look for When Comparing Gas Credit Cards

While some cards offer a general rewards program, others offer specific gas rewards programs that can help you save on the cost of your commute over time. With these offers, you are generally awarded a certain percentage of cash back on all of your gas or gas station purchases.

While some gas rewards cards offer cash back on gas purchases only, others are cash back cards that offer rewards on purchases other than gas. Meanwhile, some cards offer a lot of cash back – as much as 3% – on gas purchases while offering 1 or 2% back on other category purchases.

Here are some additional details you should know about gas rewards cards:

Some offer more cash back on gas purchases based on categories that rotate each quarter – While most gas cards offer cash back as a fixed percentage of your spending, a handful of cards may offer more cash back during certain quarters each year. During those “bonus periods,” you can earn as much as 5% cash back on all gas and gas station purchases. These bonus categories offer a nice little incentive for using your card for purchases other than gas.

A handful of gas rewards cards offer a sign-up bonus – In addition to the opportunity for ongoing rewards, some gas cards offer a sign-up bonus to customers who meet a minimum spending requirement within a certain length of time – usually around 3 months. In some cases, the sign-up bonus alone can be worth $200 or more. These sign-up bonuses shouldn’t change which card you go with, but if you have two that work equally well for you, then take the one with the bonus offer.

Interest rates are generally higher for all rewards cards, including gas station credit cards – Like all rewards cards, gas cards charge higher interest rates than almost any other type of card. Don’t let this scare you away from getting a credit card for gas purchases.  You can avoid paying a lot of interest, you’ll need to pay your balance in full each month.

Some cards have limits on how much you can earn – While some gas cards offer an unlimited amount of cash back, others put a cap on how much you can earn each year or quarter. In some cases, these earning caps can drastically limit the rewards you earn over time. Be sure to understand what the limit is and how often it resets. You want to get the most out of your rewards card possible.

Many gas cards charge an annual fee – Since gas credit cards are a type of rewards card, many charge an annual fee. If you don’t plan to use your card regularly, the annual fee may even be enough to wipe out any rewards or cash back you earn.

Read the fine print – just like with any other card or rewards program, there is always fine print. Be sure to read all of the terms and conditions that come with the gas rewards credit cards. Don’t get sucked into a deal that promises you the world, but gives you nothing more than fees and frustration.

5 Steps to Select the Best Gas Credit Card

As you explore the world of gas rewards cards, you’ll find that not all are created equal. While some of the best credit cards for gas offer generous rewards programs that might tempt you, others offer lower interest rates or other non-monetary benefits. These steps can help you end up with the best gas card for your unique situation:

Step 1: Know your credit score.

When you’re selecting any type of credit card to apply for, your first step should involve finding out what shape your credit is in. If your score is excellent, or anything over 780, you should have no problem qualifying for the card of your choice. However, if your credit is just good (661-779), fair (601-660), poor (501-600), or bad (anything lower), you may encounter some problems. Either way, knowing your credit score ahead of time is half the battle.

Step 2: Compare rewards programs and determine whether they make sense with your spending habits.

When you’re choosing a card based on the rewards program only, take a close look at how points are earned. Ask yourself if your gas and regular spending will be enough to translate into big rewards over time. If you’re looking for a card for everyday use, it’s also important to pick an option that offers rewards on more than just gas purchases.

Step 3: Compare fees and interest rates.

Now that you’ve sifted through the various rewards programs, it’s time to learn about the various fees you’ll need to avoid. In most cases, that list will include easily avoidable charges like over-the-limit fees, late fees, and foreign transaction fees. If your card has a high APR, or Annual Percentage Rate, you’ll also want to make sure you can pay your balance in full and on time, every single time. Many times you can avoid interest by signing up for one of the zero percent credit cards. These cards will offer you a 0% rate for a period of time. This can save you a lot of money if you are carrying debt and transfer that high-interest debt to the low-interest card.

Step 4: Weigh the pros and cons of an annual fee (if applicable).

Don’t necessarily rule out a card with an annual fee. Depending on your spending habits, paying an annual fee can be more than worth it. It truly depends on how much cash back you hope to earn and how that stacks up to how much you might earn with comparable, no-fee cards. If you want to know whether an annual fee is worth it, do the math.

Step 5: Pick the card that offers the most benefits for the lowest cost possible.

Once you’ve sorted through the details of each offer, you should have a general idea of which card you want. Most of the time, the best card for you will be the one that provides the most cash back and the best benefits for very little out-of-pocket cost.

Bonus Tip: Shop Around.

Comparing Credit Card Offers is the easiest way to get the best credit card for your needs. There are literally thousands of credit cards out there, and with a little legwork, you can find a credit card that offers you flexibility and valuable savings. When shopping for a gas card, don’t forget to investigate store brand cards and credit unions. Some of these offers may be better based on your needs. Keep in mind that some gas credit cards can only be used at gas stations, or may not offer cash back if they can be used elsewhere. You may also be able to find a great deal with your credit union if you belong to one. Be sure to shop around.

Get Gas Often? Get a Gas Credit Card

Whether you drive a lot or a little, getting a gas card or flexible cash back card is almost a no brainer. Depending on how much you spend on gas and other purchases, you could knock hundreds of dollars off of your transportation costs over the months and years.

And if you drive a lot for leisure or commute to work, getting a gas card makes even more sense. Not only can you earn cash back and other rewards on purchases you were going to make anyway, but you can also use your card to continue building a positive credit history.

But here’s the best part: By using your card for gas and everyday purchases and paying it off every single month, you can often earn a slew of benefits and some serious cash with very little – or even no – out-of-pocket cost.

A lot of people say they are going to pay off their credit card balance every month, but they forget or some financial emergency pops up. Little slip-ups like forgetting to pay off your balance can cost you hundreds of dollars in interest. To avoid one of these mistakes, you can either pay off the balance as soon as you get home from getting gas, or set yourself a reminder to pay it every week. Don’t let a simple mistake keep you from getting the most out of your rewards credit card.

Unless you start using public transportation, you can’t avoid buying gas. If you’re going to be buying gas anyways, you might as well get cash back for it. Using the best gas rewards card for your needs is a great way to put a little extra cash back in your pocket for something you’re going to have to buy anyways.

Blue Cash Everyday Card and Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express

Cash Money Life has partnered with CardRatings for our coverage of credit card products. Cash Money Life and CardRatings may receive a commission from card issuers.

Several years ago, I had to cancel my credit card because I noticed some fraudulent activity on it. That was when I realized I didn’t have a backup card. It was more of an inconvenience than anything, but I recognized the value of having another credit card in reserve. So I researched the best cards on the market and found a deal I couldn’t pass up – the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. This card is so good, it actually became my primary credit card and I relegated my old faithful to reserve status.

This card comes in two versions, the Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express, and its big brother, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express.

These cards offer similar benefits, but the Preferred version comes with stronger cash back and an annual fee. That said, I broke my personal rule for having a card with an annual fee and opted to pay $95 for the Preferred version – and I’ve already made my money back and then some.

Let’s take a look at these cards and I’ll show you why both of them are great cash back credit cards for many people to own, and why the card with the annual fee may be the better option for you.

Comparing the Blue Cash Preferred vs Everyday

Both of these cards offer an easy to remember cashback rewards program:

Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express:

  • American Express Blue Cash Preferred Card$250 statement credit after spending $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months.
  • Compare this card to other cash back credit cards at CardRatings.com.

Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express:

  • Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express$100 statement credit after you spend $1,000 in purchases within the first 6 months.
  • 3% Cash Back at US supermarkets, up to $6,000 per year in purchases (1% thereafter)
  • 2% Cash Back at US gas stations & select department stores
  • 1% Cash Back on all other purchases.
  • Cash Back is awarded as Reward Dollars which can be redeemed for a statement credit, gift cards, or shopping.
  • Terms and limitations apply.
  • No Annual Fee

The primary difference is the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express offers higher cash back rewards, but it comes with a $95 annual fee. But after running the numbers for my situation, I quickly realized the $95 annual fee is well worth paying, especially in light of the current welcome offer for new cardmembers.

Blue Cash Preferred Card Welcome Offer – Receive $250 After Spending $1,000 in 3 Months

For example, new cardmembers who open a Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express can get 250 Reward Dollars, redeemable for a $250 statement credit, after you make $1,000 in purchases with your new Card in the first three months.

New cardmembers who open a Blue Cash Everyday Card from American Express 100 Reward Dollars, redeemable for a $100 statement credit, after you make $1,000 in purchases with your new Card in the first six months.

Also, both cards also fall into the category of balance transfer credit cards by offering new cardholders the ability to transfer a credit card balance for a 0% APR introductory rate. Please see the American Express website for terms and conditions.

Here are more credit cards that offer new members a welcome offer.

Comparing the Annual Cash Back (Hypothetical Spending)

Let’s compare the cash back benefits over the course of the year for some hypothetical spending levels (plug in your own numbers to see how much cash you may be able to earn in a year):

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
Spending Category Monthly Spending Annual Cash Back Spending Category Monthly Spending Annual Cash Back
Groceries (3%) $500 $180 Groceries (6%) $500 $360
Gas (2%) $200 $48 Streaming Services (6%) $50 $36
Department Stores (2%) $100 $24 Gas & Other Qualifying Transportation (3%) $200 $72
Other (1%) $750 $90 Other (1%) $750 $90
Streaming Services (1%) $50 $6 Department Stores (1%) $100 $10
Annual Fee $0 Annual Fee ($95)
Annual Cash Rewards Total Monthly Spending:
$1,600
$348 Annual Cash Rewards Total Monthly Spending:
$1,600
$473
(includes paying annual $95 fee)

Notes:

  1. The calculations don’t include the welcome offer, since it is a one time deal.
  2. Pay attention to the difference between the gas and transportation column. The Blue Cash Preferred offers cash back at gas stations as well as other forms of ground transportation. The Blue Cash Everyday only offers cash back at gas stations.
  3. These are examples of common spending patterns. Adjust based on your specific spending habits and needs.

Verdict? I prefer the Preferred version by a mile (for my needs). Even after accounting for the $95 fee, the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express comes out well ahead. It’s possible to earn much more than this in cash returns as well, if you have larger expenses, or pay more items with your credit card, including things such as utilities, cell phone bills, etc.

The Annual Credit Card Fee That Pays for Itself

I’ve rarely been a fan of credit cards which have an annual fee. There are plenty of great credit cards out there that have no annual fees and offer solid cash rewards or other benefits.

But in this case, the higher tiered rewards were too good to pass up. Most of the top tier cash back credit cards offer a 1% cash back as their baseline rewards, then up to 5% cash back in rotating categories (often with a cap for the rotating categories). Some cards will offer as high as 2% cash back on all purchases, which is still a solid offer.

Both Blue Cash cards offer the same 1% baseline, but you don’t have to deal with the rotating categories or low rewards caps featured on many other credit cards. Since groceries and gas are two expenses we know we will always have, it makes sense to maximize our rewards in those categories. We will always make enough cash back from those two categories to justify the $95 annual fee – and then some.

In our case, we earn several hundred dollars cash back each year.

How I Use This Credit Card

I opened this card right before Christmas and promptly put all my Christmas shopping on the card. I quickly reached the $1,000 spending requirement to receive the welcome offer when I combined my holiday spending with our regular expenses like gas and groceries.

I also opened a joint credit card with my wife so we could both use this card on our groceries and gas so we could more quickly rack up the cash back. (The benefit of opening a joint card is to avoid paying two annual fees. We typically use this card for family expenses, and we each maintain individual credit cards for gifts or other purchases we don’t want to classify as family expenses).

More Card Features

These cards don’t have any minimum or maximum spending tiers for your rewards, so you don’t have to worry about juggling cards to ensure you are getting the most return for your time. You can redeem your rewards as statement credits, which effectively lowers your payment. And you can wait as long as you like since your rewards never expire.

My wife and I waited almost seven years to redeem our cash back. Why wait so long? Well, we were saving it for a time when we knew we would have a lot of expenses. So when we moved, we used our statement credit to purchase some furniture for our new home. In effect, we used the cash back from American Express as another savings account, albeit one that doesn’t earn interest.

American Express also offers additional features that vary by card. Some examples include fraud protection, online account management, an online shopping portal where you can redeem your rewards for a statement credit, gift cards, or shopping, extended warranties, and more.

Please read the terms and conditions before applying to verify which additional services apply to your card.

It’s All in the Details

As far as the best cash back cards on the market go, this is probably my favorite, and it’s one that I personally carry.

When I compared the two cards above, the Blue Cash Preferred was a more lucrative rewards card for my spending patterns. I encourage you to compare them both as well to see which is better for you.

I also compared them both to a credit card that offered a flat 2% cash back. 2% cash back for the same spending fell right between the two American Express cards. So this could be a situation where it could make sense to use one of the Blue Cash cards for the higher cash back in its respective categories, and use a different rewards card for other spending, such as an airline rewards card for air travel, hotel rewards card to earn free nights, or other options.

You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan Review – Robo Advisor Service from Chase

Thanks to the growing popularity of robo-advisor services, millions of Americans are realizing that investing isn’t the same thing as active trading. You don’t need to give a broker buy-and-sell orders over the phone in order to grow your wealth from the stock market. In fact, with a robo advisor, you can take a completely hands-off, long-term approach to investing. Sit back, relax, and let the computer algorithms handle your portfolio.

You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan is a robo advisor that lets customers “set it and forget it” when it comes to investing. It’s a particularly good fit for existing Chase customers, because it lets you bank and invest from the same mobile app.

In this review of You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan, we’ll take a look at what this service has to offer so you can decide if it’s a good fit for you.

Product Name: You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan

Product Description: You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan is a robo advisor that seeks to make investing easy and hands-off. Once you've made your initial investment of $500, you can sit back and let the service do the work of building and maintaining your portfolio. It's about as simple as investing comes, but some might find the annual fee expensive.

Summary

When it comes to Commissions & Fees, You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan is on the more expensive end of the robo-advisor spectrum, at 0.35%. We also found the Account Options limited: You can invest only in an individual taxable account or a traditional or Roth IRA. However, in the Investment Options & Asset Allocation department, we like You Invest Portfolio’s risk-conscious mix of smart-beta ETFs, daily rebalancing check, and glide path strategy. Unfortunately, there are very few Tools & Resources to play around with. What really shines is the Website / App / Ease of Use. Your You Invest Portfolios portfolio will integrate with the app for an existing Chase bank or credit card account, making for a one-stop-shop. Customer Service can be reached five days a week by phone.

Additional Features

  • You Invest Trade. If you’d rather try DIY investing, you may prefer to use You Invest’s stock broker service instead. You Invest Trade charges no commissions on most stock and fund trades and is a good fit for beginning investors looking to learn the ropes.
  • Automatic Rebalancing. Unlike some robo advisors that require a minimum investment, You Invest Portfolios will rebalance your portfolio no matter how much money is in it.
  • Chase Integrated App. You Invest fully integrates with the Chase app associated with bank and credit card accounts. If you’re already a Chase customer, that makes for a handy one-stop-shop for all of your financial needs.

What Is You Invest Portfolios?

You Invest Portfolios is the robo-advisor service offered by JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the United States, and the sixth-largest bank in the world. The company is the result of several mergers and acquisitions made in the last 25 years, including J.P. Morgan & Co., Chase Manhattan Bank, Bear Stearns, and Washington Mutual.

You Invest Portfolios is the sibling of You Invest Trade, a commission-free online stock broker. However, unlike You Invest Trade, You Invest Portfolios does all of the heavy lifting of investing for you. You answer a questionnaire about your goals, time frame, and risk tolerance, and the service creates and maintains a portfolio tailored to your needs.

Although the name J.P. Morgan might conjure the image of a man with a top hat and pocket watch, You Invest Portfolios by J.P. Morgan is anything but old-fashioned. You can manage your account entirely via mobile app. In fact, one of the biggest “plusses” of this service is its app integration with any Chase bank or credit card accounts you might have. You can view all of your financial and investing accounts from one dashboard.

How Does You Invest Portfolios Work?

As with all robo advisors, You Invest Portfolios begins by asking you questions about your investment goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance. It will then select one of four risk profiles for your portfolio: Aggressive, Growth, Moderate, or Conservative. However, your risk profile isn’t set in stone; you can move one level up or down on the scale (from Growth to Aggressive or Moderate, etc.).

You’ll need at least $500 to open an account. After opening, you’ll need to make sure there’s always a balance of at least $250 to maintain your account.

Portfolio Holdings

No matter what risk profile You Invest Portfolios assigns you, your account will consist of J.P. Morgan exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The ETFs You Invest by J.P. Morgan selects are smart-beta funds. This means the funds are customizable, rather than just tracking an underlying index.

The objective of ETF investing is to reduce risk by holding a variety of stocks, bonds, and other exchange-traded securities. Most robo advisors depend on ETFs for their portfolio makeup. However, there are a few, including Personal Capital, that allow investors to select individual stocks.

There are not a whole lot of customization options with a You Invest robo-advisor portfolio. However, you can choose to exclude up to three eligible ETFs from your portfolio. You can update this preference at any time.

You Invest Portfolios’ algorithms check your portfolio daily and adjust your allocation as needed to keep your investments on track. If you make any changes to your risk profile, your holdings will be automatically reconsidered. Other rebalance triggers include market fluctuations and large deposits or withdrawals.

If you indicate your purpose for investing is retirement, your You Invest Portfolio will also use an asset allocation strategy referred to as a “glide path” strategy. This means that your mix of investments will change as you hold your portfolio over time. In general, your portfolio will shed riskier investments as you age and your risk tolerance decreases.

You Invest Portfolios Fees

This is where You Invest Portfolios loses its shine. The robo advisor charges a 0.35% annual management fee, which is on the high end. For comparison, you can open either a Wealthfront or a Betterment account for only 0.25% annually – and receive many more extra services and features that You Invest doesn’t include. If bells and whistles aren’t important to you, Vanguard’s robo advisor charges only 0.15%. And you can even choose an advisory fee-free managed account at Ally Invest.

Keep in mind that, with most robo-investing services, you’ll also be responsible for ETF expense ratios. However, if you have a You Invest Portfolios account and pay any ETF expenses to J.P. Morgan, they will be offset against the 0.35% advisory fee. This is something to keep in mind when comparing the true costs of robo advisors.

You Invest Portfolios Pros & Cons

You Invest Portfolios Pros

  • Ease of Use. You Invest Portfolios is incredibly easy to use. All you have to do is answer a quick questionnaire, and the service will do the rest for you.
  • Glide Path Strategy. If you’re concerned about investing for retirement, You Invest Portfolios’ glide path strategy can maximize your asset allocation as the years pass. As retirement draws closer, your portfolio will be adjusted so you’re not taking any costly risks.
  • Automatic Rebalancing. The asset allocations of You Invest Portfolios are considered on a daily basis and adjusted as needed.
  • Chase App. If you already have a Chase bank or credit card account, you’ve probably already used the company’s integrated mobile app. Now you can add your You Invest Portfolios account to the same dashboard, making it a one-stop-shop for all things financial.

You Invest Portfolios Cons

  • High Management Fees. At 0.35%, You Invest Portfolios’ annual fees are a bit steep. However, consider that any fund expenses paid to J.P. Morgan may be deducted from your annual fees. Always check the fine print when comparing robo-advisor fees to find the best deal for you.
  • No Tax-Loss Harvesting. Unlike many robo advisors that offer this tax-saving feature, You Invest Portfolios don’t have this option for cutting investment losses.
  • Not Many Features. Some other robo advisors offer all manner of extra tools and features for clients, including budgeting services. That’s not the case here, making it a bit harder to justify the higher fee.

Conclusion

Who is the ideal You Invest Portfolios client? If you are a total investing newbie with no interest in DIYing – and maybe even already have a Chase bank or credit card account – this could be a great fit. The robo advisor makes investing extremely easy, and its streamlined and integrated app can give you a quick picture of your account.

However, if you’d rather have extra features to help manage your money, it’s worth checking out competitors such as Wealthfront and Betterment. Both services offer plenty of personal finance tools and have lower management fees, to boot.
